Ancient History Methodologies
Provides an overview of the methodologies required for the study and teaching of Ancient History for postgraduate students. It includes an examination of ancient texts in translation, archaeological evidence and inscriptions that provide information about the past. Concurrently, students are instructed in both the interpretation of these source materials and the use of them in the pedagocical environment.

This course provides students with the opportunity to:
- Develop advanced skills in interpreting the methodologies needed to interpret the ancient past;
- Develop advanced skills in the implementation of these methodologies in the effective teaching of Ancient History;
- Critically appraise historical sources and writing relevant to a particular thesis, essay or historical topic; and
- Advance skills in the analysis of ancient source material and the, at times, conflicting interpretations surrounding them.
Topics covered will include material from the following list:
- Historical Enquiry: definitions;
- Historical skills: definitions and examples;
- Ancient historical methodologies:
- Written texts - their development and transmission;
- Archaeological evidence - what artefacts reveal about the past; categorising archaeological evidence;
- Inscriptional evidence - an examination of inscriptions; a study of what inscriptions reveal about ancient cultures;
- Debates / conflicting interpretations in the analyses of ancient methodologies; and
- Employing ancient methodologies in pedagogical situations.
- Essays / Written Assignments - Assignment 1: 25% (approx. 1800 words)
Examination of an example of ancient evidence [or equivalent task].
- Essays / Written Assignments - Assignment 2: 25% (approx. 1800 words)
Examination of the teaching resources required to introduce ancient methodologies into the classroom [or equivalent task].
- Essays / Written Assignments - Assignment 3: 50% (approx. 2,500 words)
Critical essay [or equivalent task]
