Specialist Studies in Geography and Commerce 1

In this course students will explore the role and value of Geography, Commerce and Work Studies education; lesson planning and programming for Stage 4/5; course and assessment requirements of the NSW HSC for Geography; the literacy and numeracy demands of Geography and Commerce as an area of study; key geographic and economic concepts and skills; strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing Geography and Commerce; ways of differentiating curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners; civics and citizenship education; and strategies for teaching about: Australian environments, communities and issues; and Australia’s place both in the world and the Asia-Pacific region.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will have the capacity to:

  1. Articulate the role and value of Geography, Commerce and Work Studies education in contemporary society and the broader school curriculum.
  2. Discuss current issues and trends in teaching Geography, Commerce and Work Studies
  3. Develop lesson plans, programs and assessment tasks for Stage 4/5 Geography, Commerce and Work Studies curricula.
  4. Support the literacy and numeracy demands of Geography, Commerce and Work Studies as an area of study.
  5. Differentiate the curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners in the Geography, Commerce and Work Studies classroom.
  6. Use a range of strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing Geography, Commerce and Work Studies.
  7. Explain key geographic, economic and vocational concepts and skills.
  8. Discuss the role of Geography, Commerce and Work Studies in civics and citizenship education.
  9. Select appropriate strategies for teaching about Australian environments, communities and issues; and Australia’s place both in the world and the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Essays / Written Assignments - Assignment 1: Major assignment consisting of planning, programming, assessment, and fieldwork tasks linked to the requirements of the NSW Geography Curriculum Stage 4 and 5. (This assignment will consist of multiple parts to a total of 2500 words or equivalent).
  • Examination: Formal - Assignment 2: Consisting of an examination on pedagogical or curriculum issues related to Geography education (1500 words or equivalent).
