Specialist Studies in Geography 2

This course explores the principles and practices of teaching and learning senior Geography in New South Wales schools. Students will explore lesson planning and programming for Stage 6 Geography; course and assessment requirements of the NSW Higher School Certificate for the various Stage 6 Geography; strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing senior Geography; and current issues and trends related to the teaching of Geography in schools.

Upon completion of this course, students will have the capacity to:

  • Case Scenario/PBL exercises - In this assignment you will examine, analyse and evaluate two student work samples from the Geography course. Marking guidelines and a commentary are to be developed with suggested modifications and feedback suitable for a Stage 6 student.
  • Presentations - Individual - In this assignment you will lead a 15 minute seminar presentation on an important Geographic concept, idea, process or debate, and its significance in the investigating, teaching and learning of Geography.
  • Projects - Students are to prepare a detailed unit of work for approximately 10 weeks for Stage 6 Geography. Your unit should include: " A course overview, including a detailed rationale for the unit that includes an indication of the outcomes that will be met upon completion of the unit, and a brief synopsis of each lesson in the sequence. " An assessment schedule, that documents assessment tasks and strategies both formal and informal that will occur throughout the unit. These tasks should be planned, sequenced and developed. " Five detailed and structured lesson plans that use a variety of scaffolded and cooperative lesson formats, a range of written and visual sources, and include all requisite resources.
