Educational Leadership and ICT

This course examines the relationship between information technology and educational leadership. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore ways in which ICT can be utilized with educational structures and the role which leaders play within this process. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop skills in the use of ICT technologies relevant to various management and leadership roles within educational systems.

Objectives

This course provides students with the opportunity to:

  1. explain applications of information technology to educational leadership and management;
  2. critically examine the impact of new information technology on educational leadership practice;
  3. make appropriate decisions regarding a range of applications of information technology in education;
  4. plan for appropriate management of new information technology;
  5. devise relevant staff development strategies for the effective implementation of information technology in education;
  6. translate theories and research findings regarding administrative uses of information technology into practice; and
  7. confidently use electronic communication for student/lecturer and student/student interaction.

  • Essays / Written Assignments - Assessment Item 1 20% Written assignment: What are the specific Challenges facing educational leaders in relation to ICT
  • Other: (please specify) - Assessment Item 2 30% Completion of a range of online tasks which allow the student to demonstrate practical ICT use within the context of the course objectives
  • Projects - Assessment Item 3 50% The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to explore a specific technology which is either currently used, or, ideally, may be used in the future, in your context. You are to select a technology which is relevant for your educational context and provide a detailed analysis of it. Examples of the types of technologies which may be suitable include: Interactive Whiteboards Podcasting Internet/intranet technologies Laptop programs Elearning portfolios School/setting based curriculum servers Learning management systems In relation to the selected technology you are to write a discussion paper which identifies and discusses the issues that are important in your context. Some issues which may be important are funding, equipment options, policy development, staff training, logistical requirements, learning and curriculum issues. Your work should include reference to relevant research and relate to your context. Length circa 3000 words
