The course will ask students to consider and engage critically with identified continuities and changes associated with contemporary policy movements in the field of education. Both national and international movements will be examined. The course will draw students' focus to aspects of political debates about and rhetorical construction of educational issues both past and present. Students will investigate the impact of contemporary policy on the construction of teachers and students, the practices of educational and other institutions, wider social trends, and the purpose of education itself.

This course provides students with the opportunity to: 1. develop a sophisticated understanding of key concepts and historical trends related to the politics of education; 2. explore a range of political theories and stances that impact upon educational policy-making and the construction of education in the public arena; 3. critically evaluate the impacts of the political construction of education through the examination of public discourse; and 4. relate the political construction of education and education policy-making to issues of equity and social justice in contemporary society.
The following list indicates indicative course content: 1. Critical thinking for educators including basic discourse analysis; 2. Historical and international trends in education; 3. Key concepts in educational politics; 4. Applying political understanding to issues of equity and social justice in education; and 5. The impact of political discourse and policy-making on educational purpose and attainment.
