Graduate Certificate in Theology pre-2014 Program Information

Procedure for Concurrent Enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in Theology with initial teacher education programs: This information is relevant for current students in teaching programs who wish to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Theology concurrently with their teaching studies.

Description

The increasing demand for highly qualified professionally competent leaders, managers and educators has become an important feature of modern professions worldwide. The Graduate Certificate in Theology is a postgraduate program that offers the opportunity for theological graduates, or graduates in cognate disciplines, to expand their learning, explore theological disciplines in a depth they had been unable to achieve in their first theological degree, and better equip them with the higher learning skills they had begun to develop through their undergraduate studies. The program provides graduates with training and experience (according to personal or professional development needs) by developing expertise in the fast moving areas of theological studies, which investigate key aspects of ancient and global religious traditions.

Students in the Graduate Certificate of Theology may take a generic program or specialise in one of the following areas:

  • Spirituality
  • Liturgical Studies
  • Religious Education
  • Mission and Culture
  • Youth and Campus Ministry

Why study with us?

This unique degree will help you develop and expand your skills and knowledge in theologically advanced areas.  The Graduate Certificate in Theology at the University of Newcastle is a cutting edge, intellectually rigorous and highly relevant degree program for training in theological reasoning and the sophisticated reading of complex texts.  With a higher level degree, undertake with supervision from theological specialists, this is an opportunity to explore and develop multiple skills in a range of theological disciplines.

Career Opportunities

As a liberal arts program the Graduate Certificate program allows students to prepare for a wide range of careers including teaching, social work, the caring professions, journalism and the media and various forms of Christian ministry.

Concurrent Enrolment in a Teaching Program and the Graduate Certificate of Theology

Subject to certain eligibility criteria being met, students enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of an initial teacher education program or a Master of Teaching (either at the University of Newcastle or at another institution) may apply to enrol concurrently in the Graduate Certificate in Theology at the University of Newcastle. Upon completion of your teaching qualification, you will have a competitive edge in the market place and increased career opportunities. You will need to ensure that you are able to meet the demands of both programs. For more information, see the procedure which is linked from “further Information” at the top of this page

Study a Language

All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

International students cannot enrol concurrently in the Diploma in Languages alongside their primary program unless they can complete both programs within the duration of their primary program CoE. For more information please contact the ESOS Student Compliance Unit ESOS@newcastle.edu.au.
