Description

The Master of Business Administration/Master of Marketing is an AQF Level 9 combined coursework program. It commences in 2015 and replaces Program 11695.

This combined degree program allows students to undertake studies in the more general business disciplines of the Master of Business Administration while also studying the specific Marketing courses of the Master of Marketing. The Master of Business Administration program is designed to provide students with a range of analytic, strategic and leadership skills which will prepare them for increasingly competitive careers in business management in the corporate and public sectors. The program offers a grounding in fundamental business areas such as accounting, finance, organisational behaviour, economics, marketing and management. Analytic and problem solving skills are emphasised through an applied understanding of the theoretical framework within which today’s managers must operate, as well as the acquisition of practical skills in teamwork, writing, presentation and time-management. The ability to cope with rapid organisational and technological change is developed through an understanding of organisational behaviour, information systems and organisational change and development. The Master of Marketing is designed to give students the ability to better evaluate existing and potential market opportunities and to develop strategies that achieve organisational outcomes appropriate for the Australian and international business environment. Students will develop a solid understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of marketing and how they are applied in all contexts.

Study a Language

All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

International students cannot enrol concurrently in the Diploma in Languages alongside their primary program unless they can complete both programs within the duration of their primary program CoE. For more information please contact the ESOS Student Compliance Unit ESOS@newcastle.edu.au.

Admission Requirements

There are two pathways into the Master of Business Administration/Master of Marketing.

Direct entry into the Masters Program (160 units) will be available for applicants who have: * 3 year Bachelors Degree in the discipline; or * 3 year Bachelors Degree not in the discipline + 1 year relevant business experience; or * At least 7 years business experience, including 2 years in a management position.

Students entering via this pathway are able to complete 4 courses per trimester, and are able to complete courses in any sequence they wish, that is consistent with course prerequisites. Applicants with an Honours degree in the cognate area or equivalent relevant qualifications at level 8 or above will be given appropriate recognition of prior learning.

The alternate pathway is through the Graduate Certificate (40 units) which will be available for applicants who have: * 3 year Bachelors Degree not in the discipline; or * 3 year Diploma in the discipline; or * 3 year Diploma not in the discipline + 1 year relevant business experience; or * 2 year Diploma in the discipline + 2 years relevant business experience; or * 2 year Diploma not in the discipline + 3 years relevant business experience; or * At least 5 years business experience.

Students entering via this pathway will be required to: * Complete the Graduate Certificate over a minimum of two trimesters (typically 20 units per trimester); and * Successfully complete a “Business Academic Skills Program” (BASP) which will be of 6 weeks duration. The BASP will be non-fee based and can be completed concurrently with courses in the Graduate Certificate.

Only after the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate and the academic skills program will students be eligible to formally enrol in the Masters Program.

International Students

International students will be supported by the University and NBS current support mechanisms. There will be a requirement for a minimum 6.5 IELTS result or equivalent. Students studying offshore will be supported by staff travelling overseas to approved locations to provide intensive face to face instruction.

Special Needs

Domestic students with a disability or chronic illness will have their needs met by the NBS in liaison with the Student Support Unit. Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander students will draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Higher Education Centre, Umuliko. Students from rural and isolated areas and those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds will be supported through existing University and NBS support mechanisms

Requirements and Structure

Duration of the program is six trimesters full-time or equivalent part-time. The Newcastle Business School runs courses on a trimester system, i.e. three terms per year. Students may commence studies in January, May or September depending on location and availability.

Students are required to complete 160 units (sixteen courses) Core Courses.

Students should check the assumed knowledge requirements before enrolling in any course in the Program.

Grading of Degree
A Master degree shall be conferred as an Ordinary Degree, except that, in cases where a candidate has achieved a Grade Point Average of 6.0 or above, the degree will be conferred “With Distinction”.
