The Master of Teaching (Secondary) program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. Graduate of this program will be able to seek employment as 7-12 (Secondary) teachers in the and beyond the New South Wales (NSW) Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors.
The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, ethically and effectively in their Secondary school destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.

Study a Language
All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.
International students cannot enrol concurrently in the Diploma in Languages alongside their primary program unless they can complete both programs within the duration of their primary program CoE. For more information please contact the ESOS Student Compliance Unit ESOS@newcastle.edu.au.

Applicants must have successfully completed a relevant Bachelor degree from a recognised University or equivalent tertiary education institution.
For secondary teaching, where teachers specialise in certain subject(s), undergraduate studies should match the subject(s) in which you wish to teach (for example first subject English, second History). These undergraduate studies are required in addition to a teaching qualification including Years 7-12 teaching methodology and professional experience in the subject/area(s). Entry to the MTeach(Secondary) will be restricted to applicants who meet the requirements for the area of specialisation they wish to qualify in. All applicants must have at least a first teaching area; and are strongly encouraged to improve their employability, to have at least, a second teaching area.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) program shall be awarded with distinction where students achieve a grade point average of 6.0 or above.
The programs in the School of Education incorporate both traditional and innovative approaches to professional experience. Students will complete the equivalent of 60 days professional experience in relevant school settings in this two year full time equivalent (FTE) Masters program. This matches the current Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) requirements for professional experience in a two year FTE graduate entry program.

Graduates of an accredited initial teacher education program will be eligible for registration with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards, and can pursue careers as teachers or educators in both the NSW Department of Education and Communities, Catholic Education and Independent school systems; and in public and private sectors both nationally and internationally.
International students must comply with the University of Newcastle’s English language proficiency requirements. Requirements and Structure
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) program is offered as a 2 year full time program or part-time equivalent. The program requires the successful completion of 160 units that are normally offered as 40 units per semester for four semesters. Students will complete the equivalent of 60 days professional experience in relevant school settings.
In-school professional teaching experiences may involve placement in schools in a variety of geographic regions outside the Newcastle area. In-school professional teaching experiences are supervised by school or university staff, and students are expected to satisfy a range of professional teaching competencies as part of the successful completion of the program.
