To become a registered psychologist there are two avenues you can pursue. The University of Newcastle offers Honours and as well as the Graduate Diploma in Psychology. Depending on your career objectives, the Graduate Diploma in Psychology will develop your skills to an advanced level in research, psychological assessment and counselling, as well as enhance your understanding and application of psychological areas and practices.

At the completion of your studies you will be eligible for provisional registration by the Psychology Board of Australia . You will also have met the requirements to study any accredited (Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)) psychology coursework Master’s program as well as to apply for entry into the University of Newcastle’s Masters level professional training program.

Study

The University of Newcastle’s Graduate Diploma in Psychology has been carefully developed to provide you with a guided and highly relevant education for a career as a professional and accredited psychologist.

Being entirely prescribed, the program can be studied full-time in one year of part-time in two years.

Throughout the program you will study courses that will ensure your eligibility for accreditation with the Australian Psychological Society. You will become a competent and professional psychologist as you enhance your understanding of research methods and ethics, examine the history of psychological science, discover critical issues and controversies in psychology and learn to administer cognitive testing and assessment.

You will study advanced topics in the area of experimental psychology, including research methods, you will also study critical issues and controversies in Psychology. Further to this you will discover applied psychology by studying professional skills and careers aspects.

Practical research courses will provide you with the hands-on experience to ensure you are job ready upon graduation.

Careers

The University of Newcastle’s Graduate Diploma in Psychology has been accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and upon graduation you will be able to apply for ‘Provisional Registration’ under the Psychology Board of Australia. You will be qualified to begin the nationally recognised ‘4+2 internship program’ where you can continue on and achieve full registration as a psychologist.

You will have a range of immediate career opportunities in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Some public career options may include working for Area Health Services (both mental health and general health), Department of Community Services, Department of Aging, disability or home care.

Private sector careers could include career counselling, human resources, rehabilitation counselling or working for voluntary organisations. The opportunity to continue your studies at the Master’s level in Psychology will also be an option.
