Whether you are a practising early childhood teacher wanting to update your expertise, or an approved Australian three-year trained early childhood teacher seeking fourth year level early childhood teaching qualifications, this program offers you the opportunity to make your aspiration a reality.

The Master of Early Childhood Education will enable you to achieve a targeted postgraduate qualification that best meets your career goals by extending your leadership, critical analysis and research aptitudes, and develop your knowledge on curriculum and pedagogy. Are you a graduate of a three-year undergraduate university program in early childhood seeking a 4th year upgrade? Completing our Master of Early Childhood Education will not only meet the requirements of a four-year undergraduate degree, it will also give you a postgraduate level qualification.

If you are a practicing early childhood teacher looking to broaden your early childhood education expertise and knowledge in preparation for career advancement, the University of Newcastle’s Master of Early Childhood Education could be the program for you.

Delivered by experienced and research active early childhood academics, the Master of Early Childhood Education combines current theory with practical coursework to explore current issues and developments in the early childhood field. Focused on delivering the best possible learning outcomes for our students, the program also enables you to work closely with the academic staff on real-life projects throughout your study. This means you will be exposed to the vast knowledge they possess, the latest research and their critical approach to early childhood education.

Study

The Master of Early Childhood Education has been structured to offer you two possible study pathways depending on your situation and career objectives. You will have the opportunity to define your own studies and follow your interest by the courses you select from the prescribed list.

In conjunction with these elective courses, you will study two core courses. These will prepare you with an overview of current research on diverse early childhood issues and advance your knowledge as a critical and professional teacher and leader in early childhood education to a superior level.

You will critically examine the current national and international policy frameworks, professional and leadership issues, and critically appraise pedagogical, curriculum, literacy, special education and social justice approaches to establish a strong philosophical and theoretical foundation. This foundation will ensure you possess a broader contextual frame of reference when educating young children. In a course designed to implement your own research project, you can apply your choice of theoretical and methodological frame to your own practice or the examination of curriculum or policy documents.

The program has a mix of theoretical, practical and professional components to prepare you to become a well-rounded graduate, possessing the knowledge and skills to become a strong and ethical leader in your field.

Careers

After successfully completing the Master of Early Childhood Education, you will be qualified to become a leader in your field. This advanced qualification will give you the added advantage of superior knowledge and professional skills to support your existing experience in the field of early childhood education. As a result you will be qualified to take on more senior positions.

This qualification also means you are able to work in early childhood centres, pre-schools, kindergartens and infants schools in more senior roles such as a director, professional developer or assessor.
