Anatomy of the Hospital
This course will introduce the candidate to the functioning of the broad range of non-clinical and allied support services and infrastructure underpinning the day-to-day work of the hospital. Candidates will be required to spend time in major service areas to better understand how their functions impinge on patient care. Focus will be on the management, administration and organisation of these service units along with the impact of coordination and integration with clinical services. As far as possible the learning activities will be based in the candidate’s own workplace.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Candidates must spend at least 3 hours of personal contact time with managerial and service staff from each of the 8 mandatory areas and a further 3 elective areas (listed below). Arrangements with service staff will be facilitated by the mentor and hospital executive, but the major work of organising relevant appointments and activities will be undertaken by the candidate.The focus will be on managerial structure, administration and service organisation concerns of each department. Candidates will reflect on the interface of each service area on other areas, their own clinical service role and patient care.
A calendar will be kept by candidates, a reflective journal will be maintained via Blackboard or Wikispace and a short report (500 words) will be written by the candidate on each area. Suggested templates for a structured report will be available as a resource. Candidates will meet with their Academic Supervisor every two weeks.
Candidates will be enrolled in a Blackboard group discussion page to encourage candidate contact, understanding of differences between different hospital settings and maintenance and enrichment of newly established networks. There will be open online contact with the University Course Coordinator and the Academic Supervisor will feedback to the Co-ordinator at least once a fortnight.

Patient Flow areas:
Reception and admissions
Patient transport and taxi services
Mobility services, including wards men and porter services
Administrative services and community interface:
Human resources and personnel recruitment and management
Public relations and media communications
Legal and insurance departments
ICT/ Patient records
Postal and courier services
Para-clinical and allied health:
Blood bank and Pathology
Physiotherapy / Limb centre / rehabilitation services (if available)
Nursing administration (can be within a designated clinical unit)
