Ethical and Legal Issues, and Risk Management

In recent times, information technology has introduced new ethical problems and legal challenges such as cybercrime, privacy and copyright, as well as issues of accountability for the effects of the information technology. Additionally, information technology has introduced new risks that need to be identified, evaluated and managed. Business managers regularly confront these issues at times such as when balancing their need for data analysis with the privacy needs of their customers.

This course introduces students to the ethical and legal issues brought on by information technology such as cybercrime, privacy and intellectual property. Further topics include ethical theories and basic concepts, as well as the professional code of conduct.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand how information technology affects business and other areas of life, in particular cybercrime, privacy and intellectual property
  2. Understand ethical theories and basic concepts
  3. Understand privacy law in Australia and worldwide
  4. Design principles of conduct that can guide ethical decision making in various contexts
  5. Understand the theory of and different approaches to risk management
  6. Communicate risk to professionals and senior managers to facilitate decision making
