Identification of Gifted and Talented Students

This course examines the philosophy of giftedness and talent and the virtue or equity of identifying those who fall into these categories and then providing them with special education. The principal way in which individuals have been identified in the past and present will be considered along with the theoretical and philosophical bases for such methods.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Overview the body of research literature in the area of gifted education;
  2. Analyse factors contributing to the success of gifted individuals;
  3. Synthesize a theoretical basis for their own practices in relation to the identification of gifted and talented students; and
  4. Implement current identification procedures for gifted and talented students.

  • Meanings of the terms and concepts associated with giftedness and talent,
  • Categories of gifted and talented students,
  • Factors contributing to the success of gifted and talented individuals,
  • Identification processes
  • Understanding the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students.
  • Case studies of gifted and talented people

  • Proposal / Plan: Identification Action Plan
