Instructional Leadership and Program Evaluation

This course will examine the concept of instructional leadership in relation to the school effectiveness and school improvement movement and the notion of pedagogical reform. Emphasis will be placed on critically examining the role of leadership in education reform and the changing conditions under which reform is undertaken.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. analyse the role of leadership in the context of pedagogical reform
  2. audit current practice to identify issues contributing to current performance levels; and
  3. integrate understandings of school effectiveness and school improvement to plan for improved organisational performance.

The following list indicates indicative course content:The course is presented across three modules, each with a related assessment task. Module one focuses on the relationship between leadership and student learning, drawing particularly from the school effectiveness and school improvement literature. Module two focuses on the student auditing current instructional practice in their setting using an identified model of pedagogy (students are free to choose their own model). The final module draws the two previous together and asks the student to make a plan for pedagogical improvement demonstrating their understanding of school effectiveness and school improvement and the current level of practice.

  • This course has similarities to EDUC6119. If you have successfully completed EDUC6119 you cannot enrol in this course.
