Wireless Communication

This course introduce students to wireless communication systems. It introduces radio propagation and transmission principles used in different wireless communication systems such as mobile telephone, satellite communication, TV and radio transmissions. The course discusses radio channel characteristics such as fading, interference and Doppler shift to develop a good understanding of the radio engineering area. Students are introduced to different techniques used to support voice, data and video communication in wireless systems and examine the basic design wireless networks from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the fundamental operational and design problems of wireless communication systems
  2. Apply basic techniques to design radio links and basic communication systems
  3. Apply basic mathematical and scientific principles to solve engineering design problems
  4. Develop abilities to set up experiments and analyse systems performance using wireless systems, hardware and software
  5. Discuss basic technical standards related to 2G/3G/4G wireless systems
  6. Discuss basic technical standards related to WiFi and sensor networks
  • Review of point to point communication systems and capacity theorems
  • Wireless channel characteristics: radio models and wave propagation, delay and Doppler spread
  • Noise analysis, capacity and power control
  • Diversity and equalisation
  • Error detection and correction
  • OFDM
  • Multi-user communications and multi-user interference mitigation, TDMA, CDMA, OFDMA
  • Medium access control and ARQ
  • Mobile and cellular systems, wireless standards: 3G/4G, wireless LAN, wireless sensor networks (Bluetooth, Zigbee)
Replacing Course(s) This course replaces the following course(s): ELEC3550. Students who have successfully completed ELEC3550 are not eligible to enrol in ELEC4550.
