Applying a Trauma Informed Approach in Family Work

This course addresses the knowledge and skills required to understand and respond to the experience of trauma within the context of working with families, especially children. This course will not consider therapy per se but rather is designed for the wide range of practitioners working with families. It will enable students to gain the knowledge and skills required to undertake and manage professional practice and ongoing professional development in responding to trauma in families.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define and explain physiological and psychological impact of stress
  2. Identify the potential impact resulting from family based traumatic experiences, especially on children
  3. Identify, apply and assess trauma-informed approaches in family work
  4. Identify impact of, and responses to, intergenerational and collective trauma
  5. Use strategies of self-assessment, supervision and reflection to mitigate the impact of personal experiences and to prevent vicarious trauma
  1. Definition of trauma
  2. Impact of trauma particularly on children and on adults who experienced trauma as children
  3. Trauma aware approaches and practice when working with children and families
  4. Consideration of intergenerational and collective experiences of trauma
  5. Self-care for practitioners
Assumed Knowledge Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience in the field.
