Religion and Popular Culture in the 21st Century

10 Units

Despite the waning presence of institutional religion in the Western world, religion and religious themes are still prevalent in a number of capacities. This is particularly apparent in the realm of popular culture, incorporating mediums such as film, music, art, literature, and their various presences in our current context, including in entertainment and advertising. In both obvious and less than obvious ways, the ‘big themes’ of religion and theology find their way into these mediums. In this course, students will use their advanced skills in theology and religion to explore, critically analyse, and evaluate the role of religion in popular culture, as well as the correlative role that popular culture plays in religious belief.
