Master of Business Research

The Master of Business Research (MBR) is an AQF level 9 Masters Coursework and may appeal to mid-career professionals, including academics and professionals in higher education, who require or desire doctoral studies but who may not wish to undertake a traditional PhD. Students completing the MBR may be eligible to apply for admission into the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). The aim of the program is to increase the research skills of students who may wish to pursue further research study. The program will develop in graduates analytical and critical self-reflective skills.

Master of Human Resources and Law

The Master of Human Resources and Law program will provide professionals working in law, human resources, employment relations or general management with a deeper knowledge of and skills in human resource management and law through an applied, interdisciplinary program. This is the first time that a postgraduate program combining labour law, human resource management and employment relations has been offered at the University of Newcastle.

Students in the Master of Human Resources and Law program will explore critical policy and legal issues and master the current regulatory framework governing human resource management and the law in Australia. In addition, a unique feature of the program is the focus on skills development in areas equally important to legal and human resource management practice, including communication, conflict resolution, mediation, conciliation, and employment relations. In combination, the knowledge and skills developed in this program will enable graduates to be highly effective in directly managing a workforce, as well as advising others on how to do so.

Mixed Mode of Delivery

All core courses in the Master of Human Resources and Law are offered online, as are many of the directed (elective) courses. To increase flexibility, some courses are available in face-to-face intensive mode or in face-to-face regular trimester terms.

Course commencement dates vary, depending on course choice. Students can commence the Program as early as January 2018.

Courses in the Master of Human Resources and Law are designed and facilitated by expert staff, providing engaging online content and interactive learning activities, and offering students the opportunity to do their study at their convenience.

The flexible delivery of the Master of Human Resources and Law is designed to accommodate the varying needs of students as well as provide opportunities to interact and network with student peers.

Study in NeW Space

Courses offered in intensive workshops or face-to-face in regular trimester or semester schedules will be taught at our purpose-built, state-of-the-art vertical campus NeW Space in the Newcastle CBD. This unique building is an advanced learning space that supports collaboration and idea sharing in the heart of Newcastle.

Rich Blend of Research and Teaching Expertise

Students will experience a research-led curriculum developed in collaboration across two Schools. Students will be able to draw on the extensive expertise of the highly qualified Professorial staff from both the Newcastle Law School and Newcastle Business School. Scholars in the Newcastle Law School are the acknowledged Australian leaders in Dispute Resolution research and practice. Scholars in the Newcastle Business School are experts in Workplace Employment Relations.  Our lecturers have strong relationships with the professions, business and industry, unions and state and federal government, which will benefit students’ experience and education.

In early 2015 the United Nations oversaw the creation of the game-changing "Sendai Framework" in Japan – a global strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for 2015-2030. The result is a challenge to organisations throughout civil Society the world over to alter how they address issues of Hazard and vulnerability, and deal with risk!

In parallel with these events the University of Newcastle and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) worked together in order to develop the Graduate Certificate in Disaster Risk Reduction, in order to provide graduates with the knowledge to manage the DRR process across all sectors of society. Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management)

Become a clinical leader with a broad perspective on patient care and hospital management equipped to face the exciting global challenges of clinical leadership in 21st century health care.

The growing international recognition and demand for doctors with generalist expertise who can provide effective and coordinated inter-professional patient care across specialist disciplines, prompted the University of Newcastle to introduce the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management).

As the number of patients with multiple conditions increases globally, the University of Newcastle, in partnership with the New South Wales  Ministry of Health and the New South Wales Health Education Training Institute (HETI) have collaborated to develop this unique and exciting program that blends clinical medicine with health leadership and management. The program has been designed to train doctors to be clinical leaders with a broad perspective on patient care and hospital management and is open to both domestic and international applicants.

Providing you with an up-to-date education in clinical medicine, leadership and management, you will be prepared with the skills and knowledge to take on senior generalist hospital positions and inter-professional team leadership roles across the full range of health care facilities.

Comprised of eight core courses undertaken part-time over two years, the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management) is delivered within an experiential and applied framework. In response to international demand the University of Newcastle has introduced the Master of Traumatology. This is the first postgraduate coursework program of its kind in Australia providing you the opportunity to extend your knowledge of trauma care.

In order to obtain co-certification, students must complete specific courses on Government Approaches to Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development and the UN 2030 Development Agenda. Flexible Program Structure

The Master of Environmental Law is tailored to accommodate the needs of full-time and part-time students, offering a combination of intensive and online courses.

Intensive courses are offered during the compressed summer and winter terms, as well as over trimester and semester terms. Our small classes provide an optimal learning environment and promotes opportunities for interaction with peers and networking.

Directed online courses are offered in regular trimester or semester periods, allowing students who are undertaking full-time employment concurrently with their studies the flexibility to complete the course requirements at a time and place that is convenient for them.

Master of Human Resources and Law

The Master of Human Resources and Law program will provide professionals working in law, human resources, employment relations or general management with a deeper knowledge of and skills in human resource management and law through an applied, interdisciplinary program. This is the first time that a postgraduate program combining labour law, human resource management and employment relations has been offered at the University of Newcastle.

Students in the Master of Human Resources and Law program will explore critical policy and legal issues and master the current regulatory framework governing human resource management and the law in Australia. In addition, a unique feature of the program is the focus on skills development in areas equally important to legal and human resource management practice, including communication, conflict resolution, mediation, conciliation, and employment relations. In combination, the knowledge and skills developed in this program will enable graduates to be highly effective in directly managing a workforce, as well as advising others on how to do so.

Mixed Mode of Delivery

All core courses in the Master of Human Resources and Law are offered online, as are many of the directed (elective) courses. To increase flexibility, some courses are available in face-to-face intensive mode or in face-to-face regular trimester terms.

Course commencement dates vary, depending on course choice. Students can commence the Program as early as January 2018.

Courses in the Master of Human Resources and Law are designed and facilitated by expert staff, providing engaging online content and interactive learning activities, and offering students the opportunity to do their study at their convenience.

The Graduate Certificate of Environmental Management and Sustainability equips professionals with the capability to constructively engage in the full range of environmental concerns that confront contemporary societies. Time Commitment

If you work full-time we recommend that you study 1 or 2 courses each trimester/semester. On average, you should devote around 10 hours a week per course (not including assignment preparation). This could involve reading your prescribed text, additional readings and weekly tasks, participation in weekly online class discussions and writing study notes. A good study routine will help to make your studies more rewarding and manageable.

When studying online, any associated course textbooks will be sent to you free of cost. These start being dispatched three weeks prior to the start of trimester/semester. You can begin reading these straight away, though it's worth waiting for the course outline (usually available on Blackboard the first day of term), which will specify the chapters that should be read each week. Some courses have all the required material online solely online.
