The Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management focuses on developing an understanding of human resource management and behaviour in organisations. Description

A Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management (HRM) from the University of Newcastle equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to commence a career as an effective and successful practitioner in human resource management. The Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management provides an introduction to the discipline of Human Resource Management. It is designed for students with little or no background in the discipline or those wishing to upgrade their existing knowledge in the field. No prior knowledge is assumed.

Admission Requirements

Entry into the Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management (40 units) will be available for applicants who have:

  • 3 year Bachelors Degree not in a related field; or
  • 3 year Diploma in a related field such as accounting, business, commerce, economics, finance, human resource management, industrial relations, management, marketing or social science; or
  • 3 year Diploma not in a related field + 1 year relevant organisational experience; or
  • 2 year Diploma in a related field such as accounting, business, commerce, economics, finance, human resource management, industrial relations, management, marketing, or social science; + 2 years relevant organisational experience; or
  • 2 year Diploma not in a related field + 3 years relevant organisational experience; or
  • At least 5 years relevant organisational experience.

Students will be required to successfully complete a Business Academic Skills Program (BASP) which will be of 6 weeks duration. The BASP will be non-fee based and can be completed concurrently with courses in the Graduate Certificate.

Only after the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate and the academic skills program will students be eligible to formally enrol in the Masters Program. They will, however, receive 40 units credit by virtue of the studies they will have already completed. Therefore they will be required to do an additional 80 units to complete their Masters Degree. International applicants must also satisfy the University’s English Language Requirements.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy here.

Transition Arrangements

This program replaces program 11040. Any students who wish to transfer to the new program should seek advice from the Progam Advisor at . Students wishing to complete the existing program (11040) will be able to complete the program as all of the courses will still be offered.

Requirements and Structure

The Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management requires the completion of 40 units, gained through the completion of three core courses each worth 10 units and one course from the directed course list worth 10 units. The program may be completed in one trimester full-time or part-time equivalent.

Study a Language

All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

International students cannot enrol concurrently in the Diploma in Languages unless they can complete both their principal program and the Diploma in Languages within the duration of their CoE. For more information please contact the Student Advice team.
