The Master of Creative Industries is a combination of practical, creative and entrepreneurial courses designed to align your creative skills with the most progressive industries. Using first-rate facilities and Innovation Labs, you will collaborate in an interdisciplinary learning environment to transform your ideas and passions into a commercial product. You will also learn how to expose your product to the market place. One of the most valued learning outcomes in the program is the ability to understand what industry and communities require to drive social and cultural change.

You have the freedom to take elective coursework in the following areas:

  • Information Technology.


The Master of Creative Industries is a degree that enables you the freedom to choose from a variety of courses, to determine your own direction. Our coursework will enable you to translate your passion into innovative solutions for business, society, the environment - your world.

Admission into the Master of Creative Industries is based on your existing undergraduate qualifications in a related discipline area. There are a number of recognised prior learning and experience opportunities to discuss on application. Discuss your options with the friendly admissions team.

The University of Newcastle approach will ensure your learning experience provides practical, industry-relevant learning outcomes in a personally meaningful way. At the core of the program are three Innovation Lab courses, which are designed to support the development of a single project that serves your creativity. These core innovation labs are:

  • Thinking it Through: Explore the fundamental approaches that underpin the making and development of an innovation. Draw on ideas and practices such as – interdisciplinarity, creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurship to identify problems and opportunities that give rise to innovation. 
  • Making It Happen:  Develop and demonstrate a high level of creative, professional and entrepreneurial expertise within your chosen creative practice/s. The Lab and studios will provide you with facilities and opportunities to engage in real world or speculative creative projects that address the complexities typically encountered by expert creative industries professionals.
  • Making it Known: Work closely with your academic supervisor and collaborators to realise how the outcomes of your work are presented, published and made known in the professional and academic context of the Creative Industries. Presentations could include live, virtual, mediated or text-based formats

You will have access to cutting-edge technologies in your chosen discipline and be supported by highly trained technical staff. You will be mentored by world-class researchers and business people who will provide you with the theoretical know-how to strengthen your project management and entrepreneurial approach in the real world.

Simon Weaving

"Being successful in a field built on passion has always been complex. What excites me about the Masters of Creative Industries at UON is how it helps you build a unique, holistic view of your creative or commercial idea and gives you a framework to make it happen.” 

Simon Weaving is a Lecturer in Communication and Media at the University of Newcastle. His research interests include film production and distribution, narrative theory, screenwriting, and Australian cinema.

A filmmaker, writer, festival director, film critic and commentator, Simon was Director of the Canberra International Film Festival from 2009-2012, Founder and Co-Director of the Stronger Than Fiction Documentary Film Festival held annually in Australia’s National Capital each July, and currently curates the Winter Film Series at the National Gallery of Australia. 

Simon has made a number of award-winning short films, including Waiting For Robbo (2011) that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and also won Best Film at the Canberra Short Film Festival the same year. Twice a Tropfest finalist, and runner-up in AD:05 (the national Art of Documentary competition), Simon wrote and directed the feature film The Competition in 2014.

Kathryn Sinclair

“The MCI at UON offers a great opportunity to broaden your skill set and your innovation, and helps you to become successful in your chosen field.” 

Kathryn has a Certificate IV in Music Theatre from the Actors College of Theatre and Television, Sydney, and a Bachelor of Music (Hons First Class), from the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Kathryn now resides in the UK where she works as an actor, musical theatre performer and singer. Her theatre roles include: ensemble member in Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Adelphi Theatre, London; ‘Lili Vanessi’ (understudy) in Kiss Me Kate in a tour of China for the Heibei Silang Performance Agency, ‘Cinderella’ in Into The Woods for Pantseat Productions; ‘Paquette’ in Candide, ‘Casilda’ in The Gondoliers and ‘Polly Peachum’ The Threepenny Opera with Newcastle Festival Opera.

Kathryn has also made numerous television and Film appearances that include: Energy Australia advert campaign; Careless Love (Antidote Films- Directed by John Duigan); Angels in NY (SBS); Carols in the Domain (7 Network); Skins Sportswear advert campaign.

Jacob Cass

Jacob Cass holds a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design with a major in Graphic Design from The University of Newcastle.

Since graduating he has gone on to establish his own award winning graphic design & branding firm called ‘Just Creative’ which also doubles as one of the world’s most visited design blogs; having been visited over 3 billion times.

Jacob has dedicated his life to studying and practicing graphic design and has chosen to specialise in his most passionate areas; interactive design, logo design and branding.

His knowledge and outstanding achievements in these areas is reflected by the high quality of work he produces, and the diverse range of clients he has served, including the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Nintendo, Disney, Nike, Red Bull, VitaminWater, Powerade and OMEGA just to name a few.

Description

The Master of Creative Industries provides a framework for integrating the entrepreneurial skills, production skills, and research skills required for working professionally in the creative industries. Practitioners already working in the field will be able to extend their practice, deepen their understanding of opportunities in this field, and contribute to the development of new creative practices. Those who are new to the creative industries will be introduced to a range of professional and creative practices. The program centres on creative work conceived for and applied in real-world settings, managed by students themselves in close consultation with creative industry practitioners and experts.

Specialist course options also exist across creative writing, creative and performing arts, music, design, communication and information technology.

Admission Requirements

The Master of Creative Industries is an 80 – 120 unit postgraduate qualification.

Discipline areas include but are not limited to: advertising design, architecture, design, electronic games, fashion, film, music, performing arts, publishing, radio, television, visual arts.

Admission to the Master of Creative Industries will be based on a completed:

Bachelor Degree in a discipline area with 1 year relevant work experience (80 units) OR

Bachelor degree in a discipline area with no relevant work experience (120 units) OR

Bachelor Honours Degree (80 units) OR

Graduate Certificate (80 units) OR

Diploma in a discipline area with a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience (80 units).

Evidence of relevant work experience must be detailed through a statement of service and or portfolio.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Requirements and Structure

The Master of Creative Industries is an AQF Level 9 120 unit postgraduate Coursework program.

The structure of the Master of Creative Industries allows students to apply for credit to enter into the program by first completing the Graduate Certificate in Creative Industries (40 units) or apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

RPL will be considered for (but is not limited to) studies in advertising design, architecture, design, electronic games, fashion, film, music, performing arts, publishing, radio, television, visual arts.

Students admitted to the 80 unit program (with 40 units Credit or RPL) will complete 60 units of core courses and 20 units of directed courses.

Students admitted the 120 unit program will complete 60 units of core courses, 40 units of directed courses and 20 units of 6000 level electives.

Additional Support

AccessAbility provides advice and reasonable adjustments to Students with a medical or health condition or disability. Study a Language

All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

International students cannot enrol concurrently in the Diploma in Languages unless they can complete both their principal program and the Diploma in Languages within the duration of their CoE. For more information please contact the Student Advice team.
