Overview

Master of Engineering Management

The bridge between technical execution and people management can be very complex as engineers make the decision to move away from the hands on technical work to the management of people and projects.

The University of Newcastle’s Master of Engineering Management provides you with a structured pathway to develop your managerial skills and strengthen your ability to teach and lead others within a technology driven organisation. Offered to a range of engineering specialists, including mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical and software, this advanced qualification will have you focus on the art of planning, organising, allocating resources, directing and controlling activities which have a technical component.

If you are at a point in your career where you want to take your engineering knowledge and skills to a new level in management, the Master of Engineering Management has been designed to help you along this path. Developing your leadership and communication skills, you will discover how to engage in the softer skills needed to effectively manage people in conjunction with engineering projects.

Is it for you?

The core curriculum of the University of Newcastle’s Master of Engineering Management explores the broad, theoretical concepts within engineering project management, organisational behaviour and design and engineering economical analysis.

You will learn foundation principles in the commercial, financial and marketing aspects of engineering projects as well as how to manage engineering resources whilst maintaining ethical professionalism. This is further supported by an in-depth study of the theoretical and conceptual issues which influence human behaviour.

To round out the core curriculum, you will learn how to apply your knowledge of mathematics, economics and engineering principles to solve engineering problems along with the ability to understand the major capabilities and limitations of cash flow analysis for evaluating proposed capital investments.

Further to the core courses, you will select courses from a prescribed list enabling you to refine your studies to suit your educational objectives.

Career Pathways

Following the successful completion of the Master of Engineering Management, you will be prepared with the know-how to move away from the day to day engineering work, expanding your expertise and professional offering to effective management.

You will be prepared with the balance required to become an effective engineering leader, where the ability to lead by strong technical example is coupled with your ability to motivate and manage people. With this qualification, you could take on an engineering manager role or senior engineering position.
