The University of Newcastle recognises the value of informal learning gained through professional experience. Admission to the Master of Leadership and Management in Education program is available to applicants who can demonstrate a suitable combination of education, professional experience and industry qualifications.

Along with a minimum of two years professional experience, all applicants must provide evidence of one of the following:

  • Bachelor Degree in education/teaching field or a related discipline
  • Graduate Certificate in education/teaching 
  • Diploma in education/teaching with a minimum of 10 years teaching experience

PLEASE NOTE: All applications for recognition of prior learning based on experience will be assessed by the program convenor. The information outlined above is indicative only.

All applicants must demonstrate a minimum of 2 years experience as a teacher, educational manager or comparable experience. Please ensure that you include a detailed professional resume, and verification of employment.

Citizenship and Visa Details

Applicants who were born overseas and are now residing in Australia will need to provide details of their citizenship, residency and visa details.

  • If you were born overseas and have gained Australian citizenship, you will need to provide a certified copy of your Australian passport or citizenship certificate.
  • If you were born overseas and currently hold an Australian visa, you need to confirm your details of your visa type/class, and provide a copy of your visa. Depending on how your visa was issued, you may provide a copy of the page from your passport showing the visa stamp, or a copy of the Department of Immigration confirmation of your electronic visa. If you do not have access to either of these documents, please include a copy of your passport.

Educational Qualifications

If you are applying for admission on the basis of studies completed at an institution other than the University of Newcastle, you will need to provide certified copies of official transcripts.

For each qualification that you list on your application, you must provide a certified copy of your transcript.

Overseas educational qualifications will be assessed for equivalence according to standards provided by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition.

Evidence of English Proficiency

All applicants, whether domestic or international, for admission to any University of Newcastle program must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the minimum requirements for admission. Applicants should review the University of Newcastle English Proficiency Policy

Typically, applicants will provide certified copies of one of the following documents:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results.
  • Evidence of previous studies undertaken overseas in an English Speaking country
  • Evidence of previous studies undertaken in English in a non-English speaking country, and confirmation from institution that studies were conducted and examined solely in the English language.

If you are not able to provide these documents, please provide details of any employment undertaken in an English speaking environment. Your application will be reviewed and we contact you regarding your options for demonstrating English proficiency.

Description

The Master of Leadership and Management in Education program is focused on exposing students to innovative research and practice in the leadership, management and administration of educational institutions. Taught by experienced practitioners and active researchers in the field, this program explicitly integrates theory and practice to enable graduates to apply the latest research to refine and improve practice in their own contexts. Many alumni of the program have been successful in gaining promotion and/or admission to doctoral study.

Admission Requirements

The Master of Leadership and Management in Education is an 80 unit postgraduate qualification.

Discipline areas include: degree level teaching and education qualifications.

All applicants must possess a minimum of 2 years experience as a teacher, educational manager or comparable experience

AND

Bachelor Degree in education/teaching

OR

Graduate Certificate in education/teaching

OR

Diploma in education/teaching with a minimum of 10 years teaching

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants who do not speak English as a first language must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy here.

Transition Arrangements

The program underwent a major revision, for implementation in 2017. 

EDUC6016 has been replaced by EDUC6116, EDUC6017 has been replaced by EDUC6117, EDUC6019 has been replaced by EDUC6119 and EDUC6020 has been replaced by EDUC6120. Students who have successfully completed the previous version of the core course must not enroll in the equivalent version of that course.

Students who commenced the program prior to 2017 and have successfully completed core courses available at that time, will count them towards the required 40 units of core courses.

Continuing students are advised to contact their Program Adviser or Program Convenor to discuss individual transition arrangements. Any student who has failed or has not yet completed the original courses must choose courses from the current approved list.

Requirements and Structure

The Master of Leadership and Management in Education is an AQF Level 9 Masters Coursework qualification.  To qualify for the Master of Leadership and Management in Education students must successfully complete 80 units of study consisting of a combination of 40 units of core courses, and 40 units of selected courses from the directed list.

All students can access additional learning development mechanisms provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

Study a Language

All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

International students cannot enrol concurrently in the Diploma in Languages alongside their primary program unless they can complete both programs within the duration of their primary program CoE. For more information please contact the ESOS Student Compliance Unit ESOS@newcastle.edu.au.
