Overview

The University of Newcastle's Master of Professional Engineering (MPE) is a highly flexible, advanced engineering degree that allows existing engineers to develop their careers and aspiring engineers to enter the profession.

The program can be tailored to complement your background and help meet your career goals, whether you want to:

  • Advance your career with a highly relevant postgraduate degree
  • Gain an internationally recognised engineering qualification
  • Move into a different engineering discipline[1]
  • Broaden your skill set with studies in areas such as business, design or sciences.

1-year MPE
Graduates with an Australian Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), or equivalent, can gain highly relevant, useful skills whilst satisfying industry’s demand for postgraduate level qualifications with just one year of study.

The program is extremely flexible; not only will you deepen your technical engineering expertise and develop your engineering project management skills, you can also broaden your skill base in complementary areas in another area of engineering, or in sciences, business, design or innovation. The possibilities are limitless.

2-year MPE
The 2-year MPE is ideal if your engineering qualification is not internationally recognised through the Washington Accord (or equivalent), or if you wish to extend your engineering and professional expertise in an Australian context.
This program will allow you to become recognised by Engineers Australia and across the globe in places such as Canada, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Turkey, the UK and the USA, through the Washington Accord.* Your study program will be tailored specifically to build on your prior studies and develop the core technical competencies you’ll need to become qualified.

Entry Requirements

Educational Qualification Study Options
An internationally recognised 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), or equivalent

1-year option: Applicants can apply for up to 80 units of credit and complete the remaining 80 units of the MPE in 1 year.

OR

2-year option: Applicants can complete the full 2-year MPE and choose to seek exemptions from some core courses, to gain increased flexibility to undertake studies in other areas.

OR

1+1 option: Applicants can apply for up to 80 units of credit and complete the remaining 80 units of the MPE in 1 year. Applicants can then apply for a Master of Business Administration or Master of Engineering Management and complete in 1 year (subject to meeting entry requirements and credit exemption requirements – please seek advice upon enrolment if this is your intention).

A 3-year Bachelor of Engineering degree or 4-year degree which is not internationally recognised 2-year option: complete the full 2-year MPE which will be tailored to build on prior studies to develop core competencies for professional recognition.
A 3-year Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline, other than engineering (e.g. mathematics or science)

3-year option: Applicants with an existing Bachelor Degree in a cognate discipline of science or mathematics may apply for up to 2 years credit in a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree and then articulate into the one-year MPE. In this scenario, it would be possible to complete the Bachelors and Masters degrees in a minimum of 3 years.

The following will be assessed on a case-by-case basis:

  • Equivalence of degrees from other institutions
  • International recognition of degrees from other institutions
  • Applications for credit
  • Applications to undertake an MPE in a discipline different from an applicant’s Bachelor degree

English language requirements: Overall IELTS 6.5 with no band score less than 6, or successful completion of a diploma or above that was wholly conducted and assessed in English of two or more years of study within the last five years, or equivalent.

What Will I Study?

Elective specialisation courses
The Master of Professional Engineering allows you to take a cluster of four elective specialisation courses, which can be used in several ways:

  • to deepen your technical competence in your engineering field
  • to broaden your expertise into another area of engineering
  • to diversify your skills outside of engineering – in business, for example
  • build your core skills to help you qualify as a professional engineer
  • to conduct in-depth research and prepare you for entry to a PhD

Industrial experience
Students with a 4-year internationally recognised Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), or equivalent, will not be required to complete industrial experience. All other students will be required to provide evidence of relevant prior industrial experience OR complete 12 weeks of industrial experience before completing the MPE.

1-year program:

As a student in the 1-year program you will take two major project courses, two advanced courses in your engineering field, plus four elective courses from your chosen specialisation – be it another engineering discipline, computer science, design, business, Aboriginal studies, Chinese, entrepreneurism – there are many options to choose from.

2-year program:

As a student in the 2-year program, you will have a tailored program developed especially to help you qualify as a professional engineer. The exact courses you take will be determined by the program convenor. All students take ten compulsory courses (including two major projects), which will help you develop advanced skills in your field of engineering, as well as project management expertise. Depending on your study background, you may need to compliment these courses with further studies in your chosen field of engineering, or you might have the flexibility to choose some elective courses.

Engineering continues to be one of the most in-demand qualifications in the world, with many countries desperate to fill a shortage of professional skills in this field.

  1. Salaries: As an engineer you’ll be valued and well rewarded. Starting salaries average around $80,000p.a. In 2015, 85% of our engineers had jobs when they graduated - making the University of Newcastle one of the top 2 universities in NSW for graduate employment rates.
  2. Flexibility: Some engineers work 9-5 in an office, others fly-in-fly out from a project site. You might prefer hands-on fieldwork, design and development, or managing people and projects.
