Create your own degree

The Master of Studies is an opportunity to design a curriculum that is meaningful to you and your career.

Create your degree Learn More

This program is one of the first qualifications of its kind in Australia. It’s designed for the curious. The leaders. The movers and the shakers.  Those that challenge the status-quo. The innovators and the collaborators seeking solutions.

The Master of Studies is anchored by four core courses that provide a foundation for you to design your own academic journey. From there, you can create your own degree with around 250 courses to choose from. You are supported and entrusted by the university to put together your own, individual combination of courses, with nearly 250 trillion combinations to choose from!

This masters program takes a unique approach to personal and professional development. Teaching you to see the world through new eyes and be strategic in your thinking, the program actively encourages appreciation of holistic approaches to understanding and to problem-solving, preparing you to generate new solutions to existing problems – and the challenges of the future.

Is it for you?

The world and its inhabitants are becoming increasingly globalised and digitalised. A new world of possibility is opening up at rapid speed, and there are career opportunities that don’t even exist yet. If you're the kind of person that enjoys analysing future trends and tackling complex challenges, your insatiable curiosity makes you an invaluable commodity in the ever-evolving workplaces of today and the future. A Master of Studies is a postgraduate qualification that will help fuel and funnel that curiosity to help affect positive change in your workplace, community and the world at large.

You have some pretty unique and diverse skills and your job description is constantly evolving. You might identify with some of the following skills:

  • Do you work in a rapidly changing industry?
  • Are you good at solving complex problems?
  • Maybe you have diverse interests and don’t want to settle for one specialisation or discipline?

This program focuses on developing the top employability skills that employer’s desire, while making you agile, adaptive and prepared for anything that life may throw your way.

The Master of Studies program is anchored by four core courses that will provide a foundation for you to design your own academic journey.

Master of Studies

Unraveling Complexity

Complex problems are characterized by interconnectedness, unpredicability and uncertainty and have the potential to continually evolve and change. In this course, you will gain an understanding of complex problems such as climate change, population, health, global financial system stability and maintaining robust democracies.

Critical Thinking, Critical Theory

Become an independent and autonomous critical thinker. Critical thinking is more than a set of skills, it involves the cultivation of a critical dialogue between one's life experiences and the diverse theoretical traditions that have sought to give answers to the questions of what it is to know and think critcally, and how we situate the thinking-subject.

Master of Studies

Creative Thinking

Learn strategies to foster creative thinking. Understand the strategies and practices in creative thinking and how creative processes are employed.

Advanced Academic and Communications Practices

Become an ethnographer of your own learning and develop your academic and communication practices across disciplines.

From there, you can choose from more than thirty specialised academic fields, and combine up to two specialisations to accelerate a career that is customised to your vision.

Description

This program fosters highly accomplished generalists with advanced thinking, scholarly and communication practices that are robust across a range of contexts: essential for engaged citizenship and career success in contemporary and future worlds characterised by accelerating rates of change. Four core courses in thinking and practice provide an ‘intellectual tether point’ to guide and support students in their interdisciplinary learning. From there students are entrusted with crafting their own further curriculum, choosing from unrestricted postgraduate courses offered across the University. Students may choose to pursue one or two specialisations. The program also offers a PhD pathway via a specialisation in Transdisciplinary Research that allows students to explore deeply and address practically contemporary complex problems. This approach to personal and professional development actively encourages appreciation of holistic approaches to understanding and to problem-solving, preparing students to generate new solutions to existing challenges and problems of the future.

They will work with the Faculty or School to ensure that this happens in a timely manner.

Please note: All students must fulfil the inherent requirements of the programs and courses they are undertaking. While reasonable adjustments can be made, these adjustments cannot compromise academic integrity. It is the student’s responsibility to check all the requirements of courses, and consider the effects of any medical condition or disability on their ability to complete course requirements. More information is available online
